Excellent depiction of President Grant's commitment to protecting the freed slaves in a hostile defeated Confederacy. The almost impossible task of preserving civil peace after the Civil War is clearly explained. Although in the long run Reconstruction was abandoned at the expense of newly freed slaves, Grant's stature as a President is enhanced.
