Mortal Kombat 1 delivers a refreshing yet familiar experience that ushers in a new era for the long standing franchise. Its story and characters are lovingly crafted and will definitely cater to old fans of the series as well as newcomers. NetherRealm studios shows they are veterans to the fighting game genre as they continuously set the bar for depth in gameplay and storytelling. The omission of cross play at launch is puzzling and the current underwhelming invasions mode is a bit of a setback but as a whole package, this feels like 2023’s fighting game of the year. NetherRealm should be commended and this is just the beginning as the studio is notorious for adding new features, refinements and expanding on its story with story expansions and fighter DLC. This is pretty much a flawless victory and a must buy for fighting game fans.
