I really liked Geek Girl. The story of a neurodiverse teenager finding love, finding her passion, overcoming some obstacles and triumphing in the end. A classic storyline which I expected and its a tried and tested formular that works. Some of the characters are more developed than others and the focus is mostly on the main character. Many people complain about how unrealistic her journey through the fashion world is and that she is no model material. I don't really think that is important to be honest, Its not a documentary its fiction! The fashion aspect is just the vehicle Harriet takes to complete her journey of self discovery, overcoming obstacles and despite her neurodiversity and the challenges that come with that she experiences the world and puts herself out there. And yes OFF COURSE our world is not like that and fashion is a hugely competitive arena but movies can show us a world that doesn't exist just yet. I mean has anyone ever wondered how Carrie Bradshaw (sex and the city) could afford an apartment in the West Village and all those Manohlo Blaniks back in the day just from writing a newspaper column? No, because it wasn't actually important.
