I just finished watched The Conjuring today. I honestly thought that it was a pretty good and well made movie. I personally thought that it had a lot of shock value as far as the intensity of some scenes. I find that some horror movies rely way too much on jump scares either to provide a thrill for the viewers or simply just to make up for poor directing or acting. This movie successfully avoided the use of excessive jump scares however I do believe that the use of jump scares in moderation can be very effective. Something that I would do differently if I where directing this movie is I would wait a little longer to start incorporating the horror elements to this movie and then slowly and gradually start incorporating those elements little by little because it seems as if the movie starts getting scary barely after the storyline starts. The reason I would do this is because it would give a more ominous feel to the movie even though it seems not scary, you know it’s about to take a dark turn. All in all it’s really the classic horror movie trope of "Family moves into a haunted house and is haunted by some dark entity". It’s not all that creative. I also believe that the directors tried to make up for that with the shocking visuals which I would do differently. All in all I would give this movie 4/5 stars because yes, there are some things that I would do differently if I where directing this movie however this is just my opinion and everybody likes different things and has different preferences about what they like in a movie. For me I enjoyed it and found it intriguing even though there where some things I would do differently. In conclusion this movie is a classic and is very well known and loved by many, and I think that in 10 years The Conjuring will be what Friday the 13th or The Shining is now, an iconic staple in the horror community.
