I saw this film when it first came out as a teenager - just 13 years old and learning to play guitar. It amazed me and motivated me to keep on practicising! To the detriment of my education, I formed a band with school friends and began playing in local venues and continued for many years. The film itself, was a big motivator for what I dreamed of doing in my life, and actually was probably the reason that I was fascinated by electronic design, the music industry and t.v. broadcasting.
The plot is simple, over idealistic, but a cunning vehicle for Joe Meek's unique talent and showcase of his work. To see Steve Marriot later in the Small Faces, with equally diverse talent as a musician was fascinating. David Hermmings became a film actor and starred in a couple of good films. Heinz Burt formed his own band 'The Wild Boys' and went on to make the hit record 'Just Like Eddie' - a tribute to Eddie Cochran. I remember Sounds Incorporated, Kenny Ball and all the various cameo performances. There is certainly a lot of pop history from that time embodied here.
The film is a wonderful time slot capture of the whole growth of the 'pop' music genre and the innocence of our society at the time. No malice, no threats, just a fusion of music and a simple adventure. For those who lived in the early 1960s, this is an idyllic snapshot of teenage life and expectations at the dawn of our descent into present existentialism and massive time trap that technology advancement has led us into. Live it up for sure ... if only there was a decent video transfer of it in UHD!
