Let me start by saying to be fair I'm only a couple hours into Avowed. That being said I'm a bit surprised at all the hate. Visually so far the game is great, combat isn't what I would call deep but it's generally fun. I'm not far enough into the story to have much of an opinion on it so I'll just not comment on that. Could it be better from what I've seen so far, yes it could. Is it worth one star and angry reviews, absolutely not. I'd recommend giving it a go and making your own decision. It's definitely not as bad as a lot of the reviews are claiming.
