This is an atricious film. Extreme emotional, and physical, violence commited against young 16 yr old girl who lost her mother when she was 3. The father is pre-occupied with his own grief and is weak and incapable of protecting her from the violence metred out on her. The boyfriend is an 18yr old psychopath who literally takes advantage of her when she is most vulnerable and throws her across the ice. The first coach is a hard hearted and cruel woman trying to rekindle her own failed life through this poor girl. The second coach is another hard woman who is just using her for money and power. When The girl is blinded in a skating accident all the adults ramp up their abuse at a time when she needs love and caring the most. She ends up as a blind, compliant, dependent performing doll whose only option to take care of her is this psychopath boyfriend.
My friend and i cried inconlably for an hour after seeing this film age 14 in the theatre and the adult responsible for taking us just found that annoying.
It was extremely distressing and is a story of domestic violence, coercive control and stockholm syndrome it is not a romance, nor is it a feel good movie. If this is how we treat our young girls then our society is cruel and does not value them at all. I am yet to see the 2010 version.
