I wanted to love this movie. I love Mark and have always enjoyed Halle. However...zero chemistry between these two beautiful people. I mean, not one ounce of sexual tension and they are supposed to be long lost lovers. Which brings me to point #2. While they both look amazing, we're supposed to believe they graduated "only" 25 years ago. I'm such a weirdo for details, but that would mean they are both 5 years younger than I am instead of 5-10 years older which is the spread in reality. I know Hollywood stretches these things, often successfully, but in this case? No, sorry. They look amazing but they look their age. And finally, and I hate to say this because it's so superficial but it's the truth, I could not STAND Halle Berry's hair in this movie. It was such a distraction in every scene. And instead of being edgy, it aged her and made her look so awkward. Always a mess in her face and the blonde on black was so 15 years ago, making it look like she was trying too hard. Quite the accomplishment for a woman so elegant and beautiful.
As for the plot, so predictable. I had 90% of it in the first scene. Very trite, but still could have been fun in spite of it's lack of creativity. There were supposed to be some "Didn't see that coming!" moments. Except I did. There should have been some steamy "Oh why don't you two just make out already!" moments. But there weren't. I mean, there were supposed to be, but there weren't. Because there was negative numbers being pulled on the chemistry-ometer.
The cast should have "worked". But it just didn't. The plot could have worked but didn't. The writers and directors took a handful of Hallmarkesque themes and tucked them in during the moments between boring "action" scenes and terrible stunt sequences. Nothing truly developed, nothing took root as relatable beyond the surface level. We even got a nod towards racism in what was supposedly their lives in 1999 as they graduated high school. Just trope after trope after trope.
And miss after miss.
