So far, half way through the first episode, I would say while Velma does have potential, it is very much trying too hard.
To start, I feel like race is mentioned in every other joke or comment otherwise. It doesn’t really matter the race of anyone I know, talking about race in every single breath you take in normal day to day life just isn’t realistic. Personally, could not care more or less what race you are, but blatantly having an Asian character introduced by her very quickly slipping in her race into a conversation just feels very… forced in a way?
On top of that, a lot of the time, I only ever kind of chuckled when a joke was very awkward or dry, and even then it was like a very painful chuckle like when a toddler does something they think is funny. Most of the jokes are also very… fast in a way. I feel as though I’m given no time to breath before I’m shoved into the next scene. It’s almost like there’s no breathing room for something funny to happen or even time to absorb what the characters added to a conversation.
With that being said, I also think that pacing is a very prevalent and obvious issue in the first eight minutes I have seen. Most of the dialogue is very fast, information is shoved in my face quickly, the way the nudity is even randomly thrown in is uncomfortable and just random. On top of that, with some characters the lip syncing is just off at times. Such as with the police in the first few minutes, the lip syncing is off while Velma’s is relatively smooth.
With all of that being said as well, I’m kind of annoyed they make everyone in the show feel so almost awkward in a way? Such as when they even mention the race of themselves or another character, it’s almost like puzzle pieced in to be funny or even try and show some kind of diversity? It just doesn’t feel natural. I personally wouldn’t mind it if the writing in general was more fluid and natural because it doesn’t have to be an awkward thing, but the writers made it awkward to the point it feels like a Wattpad fan fiction.
Another small detail is the nudity with the under aged girls. I think it’s rather awkward just the way it’s portrayed, the way they act, the whole conversation. It’s just not well done and it very much not tasteful. And then with Velma’s step mom or whatever she would be labeled as being nude also makes me uncomfortable. It’s just so random and shoved in your face. Usually I have no problem with nudity, but it’s just so random and just not tasteful in the slightest.
Finally, I would just say that if the writing and small issues of realness in the dialogue with a fluid and drawn out, detailed plot was added to this show along with decent jokes and time to absorb all of the information, it could be very enjoyable. I just think the show was very rushed from the literal eight or ten minutes I watched of episode one. Again, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I think the show feels like a Wattpad fan fiction rather than something like a Rick and Morty carbon copy, which it is very much trying to be.
