Joaquin Phoenix was great, but Napoleon's life was way too much for a 2 and 1/2 hour film. So much was left out that it made his life and story not really make much sense. The film noted that he was involved in 61 battles, but only showed two in maybe 15 minutes worth of the film. It's hard to portray him as an epic general or convey how important the wars he was involved in when so much is left out. The film tried to captured some of the politicking that he was doing, but those conversations don't make sense without including any reference to the battles being fought. At very least, we needed references to those battles during those conversations or a map that showed what was falling under his control. It also doesn't make sense why the army would be so loyal to him when there's no explaination of how successful he's been.
