The new Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness miniseries on Netflix lacks substance. Would have been better off as a full length feature instead of drawing out the 4 20 minute episodes with reused footage. The writing is mediocre at best, original characters lack developement and at the end of the day you dont care if/when they die. Most of the dialogue is cheesy and unrealistic even for an animated sci/fi. I I just finished it and rather than drawing me in with good plot devices it just kind of collapses upon itself.
It doesnt have that Core feel, it watches like RE:6 plays. Not sure if they’re going to keep expanding with more “seasons” but if it’s going to be more of this then i’m out. It’s not like they don’t have any lore they could be using, even trying to tie in the Ethan Winters Trilogy might be worth giving a go. I feel like Mikami should have had more of an active role instead of letting the writers have a field day.
If there was one way to summarize my feelings it would be that you cant have a story be constant climaxes and falling actions, you have to establish plot lines first and build to something that gets the viewer invested. If we really got rid of all the overlap in the episodes we would have probably an hour of content.
I think the worst of it might be that it doesnt ground itself to the lore and can be interprited as noncanonical. Any time that writers leave canon out of the script it just comes off as a huge slap in the face to the audience and worse, the fandom.
Now that i’ve thuroughly and on the fly summarized a good chunk of what i found wrong, lets see if we can see what went right.
The animation and character models are pretty stable, overall even if some of the scenes are incredibly unrealistic (like an object moving in a direction it never would have) the visuals are good enough to convey depth and mood. Dark scenes are still contrasted enough so the viewer can interprit what’s going on and allow the scene to be set.
The one acception i’d say that doesnt play by this rule is a submarine scene in the 2nd episode that adds an all red filter over everything and pretty much makes the animation look poorly rendered and as if i were running it on a Radeon 590 card.
I feel i’ve rambled enough but i may pursue making a more in depth review video in the future.
