As someone who usually refuses to watch Foreign movies, due to a personal inability to deal with reading subtitles the entire movie, I was drawn in from the start and managed to watch the entire movie. Whereas normally I would usually exit a movie quickly due to it being in a foreign language.
The ending/survivor of the film was a surprise to me but I truly enjoyed it and enjoyed being surprised in an otherwise, only slightly, predictable movie.
The simplicity, realistic and strong plot of this movie worked really well together and contributed to my enjoyment.
The simplicity being with the fact that, remotely unfortunately, the turns were somewhat predictable but also that it didn’t focus on minute side paths of the movie. It had its beginning, climax and end neatly staged but executed wonderfully.
The realistic aspect of the movie being the driving cause for the location set up; paranoia or preparation of/for the doomsday of economy. This is realistically how many, many people think and despite the outlandish and desolate area they located the movie in, it is perfect for the survival training and practice the characters aim to complete. I believe this paranoia/preparedness (the movie indicates that it could be seen as either one of those descriptions) is a highly untouched trope and should be explored more in movies as it makes for a more realistic and personal personification of otherwise off handed thoughts every individual thinks of/has thought of at least once in their life. Bonus that ‘survival horror’ is my favourite sub-genre of horror/thriller media.
I definitely enjoyed the film and don’t necessarily agree with the one star reviews though I could possibly, with a bit of consideration, understand why the movie may have gained those reviews.
It’s definitely a movie to think about regarding characters and character motives and probably not the best movie for casual, non-thinking, enjoyment.
