I’ve watched the first two episodes three times in the day it came out. I’ve been looking forward to seeing it for weeks.
That said, I applaud the gorgeous set designs, costumery, and soundtracks. They’re definitely going to win some awards.
I found the filming sub par at best. I got the feeling that the cameras weren’t sure what child to focus on, what eyes to see with. There were some awkward, rather stony moments that could have been cut to save on time. I feel like the filming was too stage-like and picturesque comparing to a movie.
Spoiler Alert!!!

I wasn’t too sure about Kate at first, who was described to have long blonde hair, blue eyes, broad shoulders (that one was done right), and in my head, straight posture. She was a little stiff. But by the second episode, I thinks she great. Constance on the other hand, is too big and too neat. I think she could be even more intolerable, but she’s good for now. But the actress is wonderful, hilarious, talented, and maybe even the most promising of the foursome. I think Sticky is great. I have high hopes for him in later episodes, but he was casted well.
I think Number Two’s a bit old (compared to Mr. Benedict) and Milligan too morose. I loved his monologue though. Not only was it overdone and wordy, but it really brought the audience in. But I do think he lost his “cool” factor. The kids seemed a bit weirded out, maybe even in a pitying way. But I saw Milligan as the sort who gained the children’s love and respect rather immediately. I also think Mr. Benedict was a too stiff and robust choice. I didn’t see him quite so genius as he should be depicted. As a man with narcolepsy, I saw him as pillowy, limp, but round like a potato. He doesn’t have to be overweight, but a disabled person who falls asleep constantly doesn’t take too many risks by standing a lot. The actor is too skinny for the disease. He needs glasses and a bigger nose… I do not like the way he delivers is lines either. But about that later.
I love Reynie. My only criticism is that I feel like he needs to think more. The dialogue isn’t smart enough for the gang’s best puzzle solver. That could be fixed on the part of the screenwriter. I am convinced that he’s clever, most of the time. Just he needs more of that.
I get why they added two characters (Dewey and Lindsey) to boost the impressiveness of the four. But there characters were 1 dimensional, and otherwise completely useless. They’re were a waste.
I hope that this review will be found helpful.
