Disclaimer: I have seen many reviews saying that in order to fully understand the book you have to read other Kafka works but The Metamorphosis is hopefully my first. I've never read anything like the Metamorphosis. At first I thought it was a bit boring. Yes waking up to find yourself turned into a human life-sized bug is confusing and scary. Gregor immediately thinks about his family and what they might think of him. This showed how important his family is to him and why he provides for them. He really loves them and doesn't bother working for their livelyhood. But after he turns into an insect you really get a look at what his family is like. His father relied on Gregor and when he turned into a bug he immediately went to find work. So did Gregor's sister. She found a job and still insisted on cleaning and feeding Gregor. At first you can call her kind for doing this for her brother, but then later on you can see that she actually sees this as a horrible chore. She began to think "that's not my brother anymore." It starts going horrible. Gregor's whole family turns against him and Gregor can't do anything about it. At the end when he tries to tell his sister to play for him and they all are disgusted by him, it shows how against his family is to him. Its fascinating how fast even family can turn against each other after an unexplainable incident. I honestly feel bad for Gregor and mad at his family but I do understand that Gregor was in the way of their life, especially his sister. Edit: I've been reading the 1-star reviews and bro... you don't understand the message the book is giving. You say "I got for hw and it suks and boring" yes its a bit boring at first but if you keep reading it you can see that its a fascinating story about how people can turn on each other. And if you don't see it, then why are you reviewing this book if you don't even like to read?? Also the jeff the killer review was actually crazy. And to all of those who said "but why can't he just say...." HE DOESNT WANT TO SPEAK BECAUSE IT SCARES HIS FAMILY!!!
