Giving it two stars only because I thought the cinematography was good. As someone who has experienced DV as both a child and an adult, these characters were not realistic by any stretch. I never read the book, so maybe the characters didn't have any realistic qualities to begin with? But if they REALLY wanted to pay homage to survivors of DV in this movie, they should have done an enormous amount of research on the psychology behind what creates an abuser and their wildly common psychological profiles. They should have researched and been compassionate about the personality traits that survivors develop and carry with them to try and survive the trauma. And, they should have understood how the combination of these traits continues the generational cycle of abuse. Interview psychologists. Interview workers at DV shelters. Interview victims. I didn't see any of that here... severely disappointed in that misrepresentation...

I am heartbroken that this movie does not get complete and utter 5-star reviews. As a survivor of trauma myself, I know that it takes enormous strength at times to put one foot in front of the other, and this movie was a tribute to anyone who has survived trauma. Steve Carrell, who played this character brilliantly, portrayed the courageous battle of a survivor of abuse, and the consequences that abuse/violence can do to your psyche. This is a story that needed to be told, and anyone who rated it poorly is part of the problem with violence and abuse in society.
