This game sucks. That’s really all you need to know. But for those who want my reasons, lemme tell you. 1. Other M is part of the Metroid series, and the series’ protagonist, Samus, has always been a silent protagonist, and has been portrayed as someone who is courageous, and is willing to risk her life for the safety of the galaxy. Other M turned her into a whiny kid seeking the approval of some commander when she’s a BOUNTY HUNTER and doesn’t even work for the commander anyway. 2. Metroid has always been about exploration and finding power ups. Other M completely takes this away by having the commander “authorise” Samus to use items, and there’s one item, the power bomb, that you have, but only use a few times throughout the entire game. You have no freedom in this game, unlike past non-linear Metroid titles. 3. This game is full of monologues. This game really doesn’t understand the saying “show, don’t tell”. All the monologues are melodramatic, delivered in a monotone and tell you pretty obvious things. 4. Yes, Samus is a woman, but past Metroid games never really made this the main point of the games. They never explicitly showed gamers that Samus was a woman. However in Other M Samus’ suit always falls apart, revealing a skin-tight suit underneath. She’s constantly being sexualised in this game.
Ok, so maybe as a Metroid fan, I didn’t like it, as it took away everything that was fun about the series. But for those who haven’t played a Metroid game and are thinking to give this game a shot, don’t. There are way better Metroid games out there, and even if you haven’t played any past Metroid games, this game will still bore you with its monologues and clunky gameplay that randomly switches from third person to first person. All in all, this game sucks. If you want a 3D Metroid game, buy the Prime trilogy.
