For a film about high Christian themes, Benedetta relies on low-rent potty humour in its early stages. Verhoeven relies on his trademark violent and gory imagery to upset viewers while the nudity and lesbian angle is rather tasteful. Despite excellent cinematography and performances, you sense the feeling that this is neither Verhoeven's best nor will it be talked about 5-10 years from now. And, that's the sad part about Benedetta, the film ruins itself by employing B-movie tactics where the audience can call out things even before it's revealed.
