The first western movie my late father took me to see one Saturday afternoon in 1953. I was entranced from the get-go and still remember jumping in my seat at the loud reverberating sound of the gunshots when Shane demonstrates his prowess to Joey.
As soon as I was old enough, I bought a copy of the Jack Schaefer novel that inspired the movie and loved the story even more. I still wonder how the movie would have played out if George Stevens' original choice of Montgomery Clift as Shane had eventuated as he is physically more in the image of the character in the novel. Schaefer's son recalls the author exclaiming 'Who the hell is that supposed to be?' as Alan Ladd ride into the screen at the premiere.
Nevertheless, Alad Ladd put in a fine performance, greatly enhanced by the presence of Van Heflin, Jean Arthur, Brandon de Wilde, Jack Parlance, Ben Johnson, et al.
A classic, mythical and thoughtful western that I have both seen and read countless times and which will, forever, be my favourite western of all time.
Thank you, Dad 🐎
