I understand that they had to portray Alphaba as a sympathetic character (after all, it's called Wicked), and that the wizard was an imbecilic nincompoop (to be consistent with The Wizard of Oz). But why was Galinda portrayed as an over-privilidged, self-absorbed, and narcissistic woman? She deserved to be defeated.

Meh. Compare to David Suchet's Poirot. The movie changed the backstory considerably, and changed much of the plot of the story. I don't think Agatha Christie would have appreciated the changes. Kenneth Branagh didn't perform Poirot's idiosyncrasies near as well as Suchet.
