I first read this in 1988 after an ex-girlfriend gave it to me. I never forgot this book. I read it again last week and I bawled like a baby at the end at age 55 just like I had at age 18. This book stays with you. You can almost smell the decay and carnage as well as visualize it. The claustrophobia and tragedies can be overwhelming but so are the triumphs. You experience the journeys of several characters as if you were there. The ancient shapeshifting evil stalking the post apocalyptic America is terrifying but very human and relatable. Masterpiece of a novel! And soon to be made into a movie or aeries from what I understand.
