The movie was thought provoking yet irritating. I enjoyed the eerie suspense of who the lady in the yard was and what she represented, the closer she moved, and the shadow effects. The narration opens to triggering topics of grief, depression, suicide, and emotional instability wrapped in bad parenting. The mother has no compassion for her teenage son and requires him to have the parenting skills she lacks while she avoids accountability for the accident, treats her son as if he's a small child, while bottling up her true feelings and showing a weak attempt to remain present for her kids and be a parent. The son feels the need to take control and in doing so, he makes irresponsible decisions while both he and his mother neglect and leave the young daughter alone at the worst times. (Why is the "R" so significant with no clarity?) ; ) While its relatable to how one spirals during grief phases and depression, it also toys with the mother as both victim (early on) and culprit (later). While it had a few jump scares, ultimately it just leaves you debating sections of the movie and what the ending meant. A weird two dimensional world where mom has promise and mom gives up. Which one are they showing and when? That's a mystery even until the end. I'm conflicted and hope that a part 2 will clear up some questions in order for a high review. If nothing else, it can be watched again for the small details and clues you don't know to look for the first time.
