This was when movies still dared to be weird, flawed, ambitious, and most importantly, human. It has all the hallmarks of that era where studios were still funding original scripts, even if they were risky. And yeah, it paid the price at the box office, but I’d argue it aged better than a lot of so-called “hits” from its time. Directing-wise, Jon Amiel keeps things grounded even when the plot is anything but. He never tries to oversell the drama or throw in unnecessary flash. Instead, he lets the characters carry it. And that’s where The Core shines. The script is quietly brilliant. It doesn’t scream its cleverness, it just talks like people talk. You’ve got emotionally loaded one-liners, smooth transitions, and character-defining dialogue that lands in seconds and moves on. There’s no pandering, no exposition dumps. You either keep up, or you miss it. That kind of confidence in the audience is rare now, especially when studios are so obsessed with clarity over character. One thing that stands out even more today is how unfairly movies like The Core have been treated just because their science wasn’t explained in a way that “felt” believable. The truth is, there are tons of movies with equally ridiculous science that were accepted just because the script guided the audience more carefully. If a movie gives you a decent explanation, even a weak one, it becomes forgivable. But when it doesn’t handhold, even if the logic is the same, it gets slammed. And that’s a problem. You realize just how rare it is now to get a non-franchise, non-remake, non-based-on-existing-IP kind of film. Out of the top 66 movies to earn over $100 million in recent years, around 70% were franchise flicks. That tells you everything. Studios are scared to invest in originality, so they don’t. And we as an audience? We’ve gotten used to that. But The Core, for all its plot holes, reminds you what it's like when a movie just wants to tell a story, not trend. It's a reminder that when you kill risk, you kill magic. So if you want to rewatch something that speaks to the lost art of character-driven, original cinema, give this one another look. Captain Marvel (2019) was an interesting watch, but it didn't fully hit the mark for me. ARQ is a neat sci-fi flick that's enjoyable enough to keep you from hitting the fast-forward button. Cinematography-wise, the film does well considering its confined setting, creating just enough claustrophobic tension to maintain interest. The visuals aren't mind-blowing, but they serve the story perfectly, giving it a gritty, futuristic vibe without leaning too heavily on special effects. The acting is pretty solid, especially Robbie Amell and Rachael Taylor, who manage to deliver believable performances that hold your attention despite the repetitive nature of a time-loop plot. Speaking of which, the script offers an intriguing premise built around the concept of an "Arcing Recursive Quine," cleverly referencing self-replicating programs known in coding circles as quines. The time loop itself lasts exactly 3 hours, 14 minutes, and 15 seconds, intentionally mirroring the number π (pi), symbolizing the endless cycle the characters are trapped in. However, while these ideas sound intriguing, the film doesn't quite explore them as deeply as it could, leaving certain questions unanswered. The script includes subtle nods to looping concepts, notably through the codename "Mobius," referencing the Möbius strip, a symbol of infinite loops and endless cycles. The score and sound design don't particularly stand out, but they're effective enough at enhancing tension during key moments. Overall, ARQ is worth a watch if you're into mind-bending sci-fi and don't mind a story that opts for mystery over detailed explanations.

The A-Team (2010) felt like a chaotic attempt to modernize the classic show, but it never really stuck the landing. The script is serviceable but nothing special, mostly there to connect the death scenes. The score does its job, adding to the tension without being particularly memorable. The biggest highlight remains the creative ways the characters meet their fate, and if that’s what you’re here for, you won’t be disappointed.

Final Destination 4 (or The Final Destination) is exactly what you’d expect, same setup, same formula, but with a heavy focus on 3D effects. The plot is as basic as it gets, just an excuse to showcase over-the-top death sequences. The directing feels uninspired, and while the cinematography makes the most out of the 3D gimmick, it doesn’t do much beyond that. The acting is forgettable, with characters that feel like placeholders rather than actual people. The script is weak, filled with stiff dialogue and little attempt at making you care about anything beyond the next death scene. The sound design is decent, especially during the kills, but the score is generic and does nothing to elevate the tension. If you’re in it purely for the ridiculous deaths and don’t expect anything more, it’s watchable, but definitely the weakest in the series
