More like an extended music video than a horror movie. And dragging on for 2 and a half hours really drained the viewers more than any blood sucking vampire did on screen. This is the classic example of style over substance. Shot well, Michael B Jordan never looked cooler, Hailee Steinfeld was gorgeous, soundtrack was fresh, yet why wasn’t this the southern fried version of Dusk Til Dawn? It could have been just that and that would have been awesome. The pacing is too slow. Just because everyone speaks with a southern drawl doesn’t mean the scenes need to be more prolonged than need be. All that we know is happening is two well known brothers (twin brothers) are returning home from Chicago and have plans to set up of a Juke joint for that evening. Does that really need to take up 45 minutes of screen time? No comment on the dance sequences when the party finally gets cranking. So pretentious and unnecessary.

I was blown away. I couldn’t believe this film won any awards, let alone Best Actress and Best Picture. It’s not good. I read a review explaining how this film was made by adults for adults, but it’s hard to take anyone seriously. It starts as a promising drama and becomes a bad comedy. Using nudity, drug use, and profane language doesn’t automatically make it a mature film. The lead was fine as Anola (Ani). A Brooklyn stripper. I feel she represented girls in the industry that remain enthusiastic long after the work becomes just a job pretty accurately. But she wasn’t just an exotic dancer, we learn she’s also an escort. Ooh plot twist! A young Russian with money to burn pays for her company and wants her to be his girlfriend for as long as he’s in America. She hit the lottery bitches. After finding out he’s a son of an oligarch, you’d think a working girl like Ani would focus more on stacking that shmoney than her chances of being wifed up, but one night in a mansion has her curious. Any street smarts she had really fell off here. First, he shows no signs of a kid being groomed by elites. He comes off as a goof, and a spoiled brat. Still he knows how to book a jet to Vegas, so he’s doing something, right? These details aren’t explained. Just know his father’s reputation is well respected and he’s a young Hunter Biden. He asks her to marry him when his visa runs out, so he can continue partying it up American style, and she does. I mean she fucking does, because she can’t say five words without dropping an f bomb. His parents find out and order an entourage to undo the marriage and send the brat back to mother Russia. This goon squad also lacks any elite mentality. All but one seem unable to control any situation and this is how they introduce a new love interest for Ani. She hates him of course, and he has to physically restrain her. The Vegas lights still have her in a daze because she’s whole heartedly claiming true love and that the kids parents should respect their marriage. No one is convinced. Not even her fresh new hubby, who flees his mansion without her when he finds out momma and papa are onboard a flight as they speak. If only she played Fortnite I think they could of had something. I couldn’t help but think, did she get the 15k or not? Is this another pretty woman situation where it was a verbal agreement and he was going to pay her after? Anyways, Ani is left to deal with the thugs and they take her with them to track down the brat. One of her captors is a a quite tough man who does a decent job acting like a ticking timebomb waiting to explode but doesn’t. Three Stooges level comedy ensues and we finally meet the Bolshevik’s where the mother seems to be the one in power and the father just finds it all amusing. Ani is offended someone called her a whore, and the polite thug sneaks her a drink to calm her. This dude forever keeps his cool, even after the search for the brat is over and the marriage is annulled, he completes his task of taking Ani back home. Ani is just in shock that during this whole ordeal he didn’t try to grape her. That’s enough for her to know he’s a good guy. That makes her cry. Well, she’s such a pro you know kissing is a whores kryptonite. Remember what Kit said, no kissing on the mouth! lol I think she’ll be ok.
