After I first read The Catcher in the Rye, I was confused and disappointed. It seemed like the book had barely any plot, and nothing ever happened. I didn't understand what the point was. However, upon reading the book a second time and analyzing the book more closely, I realized that unlike most books, the focus of this book strayed from the main storyline for a reason. To understand the main character, Holden Caulfield, you have to pay attention to the details of the little things, the side stories, and the subplots. Although they had seemed irrelevant at first, they opened up my eyes and my heart to Holden and his journey as he struggles to find purpose in our complex, beautiful, and often unforgiving world.
