So as a massive fan of the first game who was slightly disappointed by the second, I went into this with mixed expectations. Unfortunately even those expectations were too high.
I'll try to keep this brief. This is the weakest Dying Light game so far.
The night-time horror has been restored to its former glory which is the only reason I didn't give this one star.
The combat and parkour are the worst they've ever been. The story is predictable, the characters are two-dimensional, the villain is a moustache-twirling dick-dastardly cartoon, and the map (while pleasant to look at) is smaller and less interesting than any previous one in the series.
Crane - a once mighty zombie killing machine - is now worse at literally everything than he was in the first game; despite being (for lack of a better term) a werezombie. He has the health pool of an immunocompromised infant, the stamina pool of a morbidly-obese asthmatic, the balance of an eight-toed drunk, and the intelligence of a Reform voter. I suspect the development team have fallen into the 'make every game a soulslike' mentally, but I can't be sure; either way, there is a fine line between challenging and frustrating and this game fails to navigate that line.
The parkour is in some sort of strange purgatory between the first game and the second where it feels slower than the second game and clumsier than the first.
The combat is pitifully awful; every attack is basically a massage, every boss and mini-boss is just a move-spamming bullet-sponge, the aforementioned 'morbidly-obese asthmatic stamina' means you need a break from fighting every 5-10 seconds, every zombie has an unavoidable grapple attack that they can initiate from 4 meters away, and Crane will now fall over when challenged by a gentle breeze. Regrettably, what was once my favourite part of Dying Light is now something that feels like you aren't allowed to enjoy it.
The levelling system is embarrassingly rudimentary with very little difference between min and max level. The titular beast mode is underwhelming and underdeveloped and every upgrade you unlock for it is just something that it should have come with out of the box.
I paid nothing for this game, I got it for free; and I still hate it.
Do with that what you will.
