The original Color Purple is one of my all time favorite movies. I've watched it a million and one times and know line by line. LOL So to say that I went into this with a critical eye was an understatement (respectfully). Because I love The Color Purple so much, I was excited to hear that a new one would be coming out; but was very skeptical of it being a "reimagined" version on top of being a musical.
All that said, I was VERY pleasantly surprised and so very pleased at how well they honored the original movie... keeping to the story and for the most part, the "script." The variation in the story was so subtle enough that if you weren't a true CP fan who had watched it a bunch, you wouldn't have noticed the differences. And the "reimagined" scenes weren't so far off from the original that you would find yourself feeling like it was a new movie. All in all, even though the original will always be my favorite, I give this movie 5 stars because it kept the nostalgia of "your grandma's original recipe," while sprinkling in a little bit of love from the "young mothers" making their own way. (LOL Sorry, I'm a southern gal and that's the only analogy I could think of that fits). I was also pleasantly surprised at how BALANCED the movie was to be a musical. Usually with musicals the people are singing a new tune every 10 steps and five lines. LOLOL But there was such a sweet balance. There were a lot of speaking and interaction scenes in between the musical numbers, so I didn't find myself rolling my eyes and going "OMG another song... really???" Add to that, that the songs were BEAUTIFULLY composed and the choreography was very entertaining... and I actually found myslf waiting to see if the next number was going to be as good as the last. Not to mention that they came out the gate (the first song) with Tamela Mann LITERALLY and figuratively taking us to church... enough said. LOLOL So, my recommendation, it is DEFINITELY worth watch, even if you're not a fan of musicals!
