I'm not one to get involved in controversies, but I think that the culture of a people needs to be respected above all else, and this concern should exist because of the way we show people's culture and their beliefs to the rest of the world. Abaete Lagoon and Bonfim church are located in the city where I was born and grew up. Two places that are part of our culture and our history. Abaete lagoon was for a long time one of the main sources of income for the people who lived there, who fished and washed clothes in the lagoon, other than that it is a place with countless natural resources and which still has great importance for the people who live and work there. For us Baianos and Catholics, Senhor do Bonfim is a representation of Jesus Christ and the ribbons of Senhor do Bonfim (which is a beautiful color ribbon) carry the power to fulfill three wishes when they break, their different colors represent the different Orixás, a reference to African culture, part of our history and culture, for which we owe RESPECT above all else. We know that cutting the ribbon represents the non-fulfillment of the wishes requested, but NEVER something negative and/or bad. Seeing my culture represented in such a wrong way caused me sadness and disappointment. I understand that the horror genre appeals to many but using it as a way of denigrating the culture and history of a people is, at the very least, a lack of respect and responsibility for the information being conveyed to many. Here is my rejection of this series and its creators/directors, for a world that is more respectful of the cultures and histories of people.
