It’s undeniable that the suspense in this series keeps viewers on edge — but at what cost? The heroine embodies the violence and moral decay of contemporary society. Alba is selfish, ready to do anything to protect her small world; for her, society is the enemy, the police are useless and deserve no respect, lies are normalized, and her son is raised in deception. Meanwhile, the utterly amoral criminal ends up enjoying a happy ending in a collapsing society. This is a subversive film, where the suspense ultimately feels gratuitous — because it serves an immoral narrative and leaves a bitter aftertaste. One cannot help but loathe this world of wealthy bourgeois perfumers and feel that the world is indeed doomed. And lurking in the background is the “revenge of the people,” the revolt of the disaffected — a heavy-handed leftist influence that permeates the story.
