I think some reviews have missed the point of the movie. It isn't glorifying conquest at all. Rather it shows how dedicated and loyal to orders these few spaniards were, despite all odds, and that they wouldn't believe anyone who tried to deter them from their mission, because they didn't have official orders.
It was futile, and the movie is very sad, but a snippet into history where people can be dedicated to a wrong cause, and so much is lost because of it.
