WHY ARE THERE PEOPLE HERE WHO DON'T EVEN READ OUR REVIEWS AND THE REASON WHY WE HATE THIS BOOK??? No. It's not because young people are forced to read it and thus harbor "rebellious feelings". In fact, we love books that are actually good like for example: Animal Farm, the Chrysalids, and the Kite Runner. BUT THERE'S A REASON THIS BOOK IS TRASH. First. Please let Frenchie have at least a grain of character development. After going through all that, it's EXTREMELY reasonable to say that he wouldn't be jealous over a boy his age talking to a girl he liked (so far into the book, you'd assume he'd mature a little bit). His entire personality is just COMPLETELY contradictory to how he's supposed to behave, especially in the context of a dying, frothing, dangerous world that's being persecuted by these Recruiters that we continue to know nothing about even until the end of the book. Throwing in bits of sexual themes doesn't make the story romantic and interesting either. Okay we get that teenagers are sexually active and this book is a young-adult genre but HALF OF THESE SEX-RELATED TOPICS HAVE NO CONTEXT. It diminishes the entire story from a potentially well-crafted piece of dystopian literature into a corny, stupid, wannabe-love-triangle-esque, cheesy book made for kids that read too much Wattpad. Not to mention, the book itself contains cheesy lines that ruin the atmosphere. Not only do these characters have no awareness, their actions seem so ludicrous and completely unminded that I fail to see how this book captures any of the ideas that it was supposed to portray. If anybody here doesn't get what that means: IT'S NOT LOGICAL FOR THE CHARACTERS TO ACT THIS WAY. The persecution of Indigenous people is no joke, but this book is trying so hard to make it one. Throughout this entire novel, the only thing that was mildly interesting was the plotline. It felt like reading a Wattpad book written by a 12 year old desperately trying to prove a point. This book demonstrates a serious topic, except it's executed in a HORRIBLE way. Throwing in some random fancy-sounding metaphors and OVER-SEXUALIZING the main love interests of the male characters isn't going to make your book good.
