The Charmed Series (both old and new) are brilliant!
I'm a firm believer in appreciating shows for what they are and evolve into, so I won't be lifting up the old series by bashing the new.
With the old series, I loved the dynamic between the original 3 cast members and Rose's character had to grow on me back then (since I was younger and less tolerant of change in a world that generally encourages you to be so). But... once I embraced her, I consider the series to be one of my favourites of all time. It had a certain maturity about it and you truly felt a part of the magic. And the house captivated me so much so that I recreated it in The Sims 2 several times, decorating it with every detail...down to the Book of Shadows. It was brilliantly written and very much relevant for its time.
With the new series, I absolutely love the diversity!
Sadly... people are still so entitled to believe that only seeing representations of themselves in fantasy make for a good series instead of growing and realizing that the world is (and always has been) so much greater than the traditional WASP viewership. What a world we live in that thinks prejudice and poor representation is 'politics', instead of base bigotry. Nice.
When I was young, I generally had to 'imagine' seeing myself as a princess, witch or enchanted being. But now, I own my inner witchly diva with a vengeance! While I tend to create my own representations by writing, it's wonderful to know that there is a generation of young girls who can actually see themselves in the characters in a way that empowers them and that they can relate to.
The new series is also very well written, but has a totally new and modern feel to it. I find the sisters refreshingly delightful, once you get to know them and their respective backgrounds. I LOVE the way the actresses are making it their own!
Oddly enough, once I started watching the show, my hubby also became hooked. We share a love for fantasy and magic... among other things.
Since the show is finally settling in as its own entity... with a new house and a new book of magic and new demons to annihilate... the updated feel fits well into today's techie world, yet elements of old world charm still pervade... linking the old and the new series with subtleties from the past.
For me magic is life and truly makes the world we live in evaporate in a land of witchcraft and demons.
Both series have a place in my current and future video collection! Highly recommend BOTH to EVERYONE!
