In the movie, Gary inserts himself into a situation that isn’t his to solve….Karen’s pregnancy. He hopes that paying for the abortion will win her heart. It doesn’t. Gary learns a VERY hard lesson; you can love someone and not have that love returned. Granted, she should have told him the truth (he was a great friend but nothing more). However, they needed to set up the greatest zinger ending in the history of 80’s teen cinema. The director wanted you screaming at Karen….and we did. Masterful acting.
