I LOVED the first one. It quickly became one of my favorite movies. This one, however, is extremely disappointing for several reasons. 1. The Joker is a twisted and demented character. So WHY are we singing?!?!? Who the heck was like “we should make this a musical!.” ??? It honestly feels like the directly knew absolutely nothing of the character.
2. The movie teased the audience the entire time. He’s in an institution, he almost escapes, he gets caught, he almost escapes again, he gets caught, then out of nowhere he dies. There was no plot. I honestly don’t even know the point of the movie. Which is extremely sad because Joaquin Phoenix is such an amazing actor and he did phenomenally but the movie itself just sucks. The last movie ended with the riots applauding him for his actions and he feels satisfaction at what he’s done. That would have led me to believe this movie would be about him taking advantage of that power and building his empire as The Joker.
3. He dies at the end out of nowhere. AND BY THE HANDS OF A RANDOM CHARACTER. It felt like such a lazy way to end a movie that was already bad.
I don’t know if there was a hidden meaning in the events that took place and the fact that it was a musical… regardless, I couldn’t tell you what it was. 2/10 for me. The 2 points are simply because Joaquin is amazing in every role he plays.
