This movie moves slow, but it’s still captivating. You can’t help but feel that this family wants to be close, but painful things in their past keep coming up. Once they tap in to the spirit of their ancestry, the tension is released and love can abound again between brother and sister. It’s a really genius way to show that the dark history of slavery does cause pain, but the posterity of former slaves need not be defined by this; rather, they can tap into their kindred dead for who they were as people, and not just what happened to them.
