Tanya Maniktala might be one of the worst actresses I've come across in a while. Although I had gotten used to seeing her as Meenakshi Iyer, had she not been there, the story would have felt just the same. An amateur private detective with horrible facial expressions, untimely smirks, and overall horrendous presence as a thriller lead leaves very little to be desired. I'm confused as to what merit they had cast her. Was nepotism involved? Or was she the cheaper actress to employ (respect is intended)?
To talk about the series as a whole, It's your typical "Detective on a big chase" kind of story, nothing novel, didn't have to be as such. The ending was rushed, some of the supporting characters were unnecessary, like the Doctor who was treating the patient at his home laboratory, the Intelligence Official who's backstory and intentions were not properly described, in fact, they didn't even think to refine the core intentions of the lead antagonist. And as for the primary victim, Partho, his screen presence was so darn unlikable, I was genuinely glad that he was the one who had died. The character Shubho's obsession with elections was something else which was unendingly irksome.
To add a positive note (God bless that I found one), the character which actually felt palatable and convincing was Meena's brothers girlfriend (can't remember her name), who genuinely brought substance to the character. However, her career as a journalist could have been better projected.
The locations might have been the best part of the series. The scenic aesthetics of Kolkata, especially Iyer's capacious apartment with a gorgeous veranda, and the idyllic verdant pulchritude of Littlong might be the only things I had actually enjoyed.
To conclude, here is my final message:
PI Meena, never come back as season 2. You were a decent watch for purely scenic visuals, but as a pure storyline, it was more disappointing than it could have been "thrilling". You know a series is bad when even Parambrata cannot save it.
And as for Ms. Maniktala, if you can't train yourself to be a serious actress, don't do thrillers. It's hard to take you seriously with your doe eyes to begin with. But to be very honest, you weren’t all bad, but your preponderant presence as a horrible actress on this series left a bitter taste for me to ever consider watching anything with you in it. Take this constructively and rebuild your craft, because to be honest, you do have potential to grow and evolve.
Thank you. Until the next review.
