Loved the book, the characters, the plot, the intermix of Jews, Black Americans, immigrants and the time period which illustrates the challenges, the daily lives of these characters, their complex yet simple human connections they demonstrated and sought while adapting to change, preparing for change and sometimes getting crushed for their efforts. McBride is a master in using this story to identify the precursor and the roots to where we are today in terms of the tension between the old guard of White America who feared”replacement” by immigrants, non whites and foreigners who came to pursue the American dream. McBride offers hope for making the American dream through the main character Chana who is a righteous sole that seeks equality and respect for all people in her community and is fearless in demanding equality and demonstrating humanity for all Americans,
