It’s dark. It’s evocative. It’s definitely an art house experience. And the acting isn’t bad (though occasionally histrionic). But the problem is, there isn’t much plot and the only two characters, however brilliantly portrayed, are walking cliches. And if you set an artificial intelligence screenplay writing program to write a lighthouse movie, you’d get something similar (mermaids, sailors with bad legs, storms, dead albatrosses/seagulls, etc). It was apparently a low budget movie, which explains the absence of a whale or shipwrecked woman to set up some jealous mayhem. Which brings me to another point, from the first scene onward, it was pretty clear someone at least would not get off the island, but the actual triggering mechanism seemed banal in the extreme. And any moral we can derive from all this?— apart from “don’t drink jam-flavored kerosene, kids—you could get eaten by seagulls!”
