I am blown away by the almost perfectly split reviews everywhere.
This review is for everyone who does not understand the point of the movie, I hope this makes it make more sense and maybe a revisit will change your mind.
1) This movie is basically a guided meditation. This is done through Hanush's observation of Adam's dreams/memories/ deepest regrets.
2) The sound design/engineering is genius if you are in the right headspace. The more meditative the better. A hybrid strain helps. Examples of this are the almost isochronic tones used tactically to overwhelm your senses. The music/sound in this movie conveys emotions, such as dread, regret, remorse, longing, and at times gracious thanks for the connections that are available in the darkest of times.
3) If you have ever experienced a traumatic event, you probably know the sensation of a memory being so powerful and vivid that it basically overlays life, your other senses become almost borrowed. This is reflected in the film as Adam drifts in and out of waking focus consciousness and is instead overwhelmed half feeling/remembering his partner and their relationship. It's established that they essentially became two halves of the same person. The distance created between them prior to him leaving allowed for resentment, disassociation, and in some ways the slow boiling-frog death to their intimacy/vulnerability.
4) The idea of vibrations deep in space drawing in Hanush are a subtle nod to using meditation as a means of finding a presence (assign it to your own consciousness or elsewhere) that might help guide and heal you. The vibrations of the broken equipment left Adam's character constantly in a deep and vivid dream state where he was reliving all of the previously mentioned emotions, including fear of being alone. The vibrations, vivid emotions, and extremely powerful dreams meant that Hanush was inevitably drawn-in. Unable to resist the pull of Adam's emotions and dreams, maybe because they mirror a similar sadness/sorrow in Hanush.
The magic of this film comes from the shared perception of Jakub and Hanush while revisiting Jakub's dreams/memories. Hanush immediately recognized that Jakub carries a crippling amount of guilt. As time progresses and Jakub starts to work through the emotions and memories he has, as well as the associated trauma (I.E. his childhood watching pigs being slaughtered, his father being a "traitor", losing his homestead, and many more), Jakub starts to regain focus, consciousness, determination and meaningful effort. We watch and experience as Jakub slowly becomes less hollow, as he rekindles, and he is able to remember why he felt what he felt, and what he would do to regain that opportunity. This is all thanks to the insight and guidance of Hanush, who in some ways represents the characteristics of who Jakub once was, and needs to become in order to find some semblance of peace again.
Takeaway: now is your opportunity to rekindle your love for your friends and family, and to make memories that last, and to really take in the reality that we are all afraid ultimately of being alone and lost in this scary world, (let alone this massive universe!). juxtaposed to Jakub, alone in a seemingly space, finding salvation through eon old wisdom and selflessness, while realizing the very real weight of living alongside a universe that is alive and older than you can really grapple with without feeling at least a little humbled, his wife is lost and alone in her own version of a cold expanse. The only person she ever really loved, trusted or let in, has basically thrown his hands up and given up on understanding or realizing the situation.
