*sigh*.... where do I begin?
Rest Stop is a movie from 2006, that had the potential to be a really great horror/ slasher film. At least, that's the impression I got from the trailer. Realizing that with films like Texas chainsaw massacre(the newer one not the original), this film had big shoes to fill. Sadly, it falls quite short.
It opens up with a terrifying scene playing out in a dilapidated rest stop bathroom. A young woman, using the toilet, then a creepy man standing outside her stall looking in through the crack at her and then also sniffing through the crack of the door, as she attempts to get him to leave her alone. He pretends to leave and sneak attacks her as soon as she ventures out of the stall. It's scary, but predictable.
The movie then continues with a generally boring principle; young woman still living at home, in a nice house, privileged upbringing, decides she's "running away" from her Texas home, headed to LA, with her jerky meathead boyfriend.
Somewhere along the way, they're being stalked, unbeknownst to them, by the same creepy guy from the beginning of the movie. Eventually they have a near accident with said creep, where meathead boyfriend hops out of the car making empty threats, and creepy guy drives off.
They end up at the rest stop.... and this is where a movie with potential, flushes all that potential right down the toilet.
The main character makes several confusing and foolish decisions that make no sense. The movie frequently alludes to the fact that she's seeing things that aren't there, even having entire conversations and drawn out scenes of apparent hallucinations, but at the same time that real things are actually happening. However there's never any explaining as to why she's hallucinating, which parts are real, etc.
The protagonist also has several opportunities to kidnap or kill her but doesn't until the end of the movie when she inexplicably puts herself in his path on purpose so she can exact revenge.
All in all this movie was a total disappointment and not worth having a part 2. If the story line didn't kill it, the terrible acting sure did!
