The original 1993 The Wedding Banquet by Ang Lee is one my favorite movies. Sadly, this 2025 remake is complete let down.
For all its glossy charm and heart-warming beats, The Wedding Banquet (2025) can’t hide the fact that its central players are deeply irresponsible. Chris drifts through life avoiding a real job, then implodes what’s left of his integrity by drunkenly sleeping with Angela. She’s no better—her own recklessness makes her impossible to champion. Their respective partners, Min and Lee deserved better. And yet, the film swaddles them in a happy ending, with their partners granting blanket forgiveness as if betrayal were just another quirky plot point. In leaning so heavily on the catharsis of coming out and family acceptance, the narrative glosses over a harder truth: basic human accountability and decency still matter, no matter how progressive the framing.
While it successfully conveyed the challenges of coming out, family acceptance with moments of triumph for the individuals, I am disappointed with the quality and messaging of the movie.
