Atonement is a powerful story of love. How it can bring some together and tear others apart. It is a tale of growing up and understanding, written mostly through the eyes of a young girl who simply acts out of love, even if that is the cause of terrible suffering and sadness. If I could read Atonement again for the first time I would, and perhaps, I would skip the final part. I would allow the story to end in love and forgiveness in the way Briony imagined it, rather than in the cruel, worldly way that it did.
To anyone who attempts to read this beautiful book...prepare yourself. Prepare yourself for intense emotions that you will not believe simple words can bring. Feelings of joy, anger, confusion, betrayal, sadness, and affection.
Reading Atonement is not as simple as following words across a page. It is more a way in which Ian McEwan leads you to follow the characters across a journey. An incredible journey, full of heartbreak and happiness, contentment and calamity.
