I was excited to watch Deaf U because Nyle DiMarco is one of the producers and he seemed like a nice and humble guy when I saw him on ANTM. I love seeing all the great work he has been doing for his community since the show. Sadly, I was kind of disappointed after watching the show. I thought Deaf U would be more about how deaf students go to school and how they want to build a life for themselves, but a large portion of the show was about college kids hooking up with one another and just hanging out. I know that’s part of college life and it is a reality show. They want to show that deaf college kids are like regular college kids, but I expected more than that because after all the show is called Deaf U and takes place at a college. They should have shown how a deaf person can still be smart, work hard, and get a degree and job.
I did like that it portrayed deaf people as regular people that can have relationships and personal struggles. I also liked that it went into the different backgrounds the cast members came from and how diverse deaf culture is, but each episode was so short that it mainly focused on young adult life rather than actual college student life. I found it odd that they barely mentioned what the cast members are majoring in and what their goals in life are. It made it seem as though they cared more about their personal lives and relationships than going to school to get an education. That probably is not the case for all of them, but it came off that way. It also kind of sets a bad example for a young person that might want to go to Gallaudet or any college because it gives that image of going to college just to party and hook up. They have some really great cast members and I think it would have been better if the episodes were a little longer and at least incorporated what the cast members are studying and what they plan to do in life.
