Watch Dune 1984 first.
I'm struggling w/2 stars, for cinematography & music. I so wanted to give this version 5/5. The story is slow, pathetic & boring & for anyone who knows nothing of Dune, they'd know less afterwards bc this longer movie only makes it half way & explains little of Dune's rich tapestry.
As a 1984 viewer, I expected to be blown away by the WHOLE spectacle as I was back then. 28 years later, it reflects a regressed society rather than Paul becoming the holistic leader of the Fremen, fighting for freedom alongside his powerful supporting characters.
While some classic lines remain, most were removed. Nearly all of the women's characters, their superalative strength & inspiration has been turned into completely dull, oppressed, scared weaklings w/no empowerment of their own & incapable of the slightest confidence or fearlessness.
Jessica's character, who was extraordinary in Dune 1984, is a constant weakling, crying & quivering like a deer in headlights. Paul's is a woss & no one would believe he's the Kwisatz Haderach. Mother Helen Boeheim, shrouded like an old detested witch in the dark, couldn't be further from the truth.
Their costumes were dowdy & drab, nothing majestic or worth noting. Never forgetting bc they were so amazing, doesn't happen by comparison. The stunning detail is diluted beyond recognition.
Many characters have no memorable identity & without knowing, the viewer is being denied so much of the power & thrill on all sides, that came w/Dune 1984. No point being a vast spectacle if the characters make little impact.
To think it was dragged out as Part One, while so much depth of character & story telling has been removed imo, is an epic fail. If this was the first I'd heard of Dune, it wouldn't inspire watching Part Two & that's a huge loss to the extraordinary story & detail of Dune.
