It is a poorly written movie, I hope I can get away rating it with no stars, otherwise I will give it one. Sadly they had to write a lot of dumb script to make the movies storyline work. I like to see better writing than this though, where they don't haft to write dumb to make the movie work. Whoever wrote this must either really feel confident the audience is too stupid to figure all this out or all these common sense things just never occured to them. It is like a teenager wrote it. I have seen this trend a lot on Netflix. Here is a HUGE example of why I say this...
Benicio Del Toro is a police homicide detective who has uncovered corruption in his own department. Even though his and his wife's lives are in danger he chooses to sit on this info himself... Duh! I am not a police officer or a detective but ANYONE with BARE MINIMAL COMMON SENSE can EASILY figure out that the smartest thing he could do is to discreetly contact an outside law enforcement agency like the FBI (sooner rather than later) and start getting these things investigated at a higher level of law enforcement but to also let them have his back for protection.
This whole movie is written in a way where Benicio's character doesn't do the intelligent thing over & over again and consistently walks into a bad situation cluelessly ignorant that he is being a indiscreet idiot! Like checking out the suspect car under a tarp in one of the crooked cops garage right in the middle of a party where anyone could walk in and catch him (and they did). He didn't just quickly glance at it, he was going through it in depth and taking his time... Duh again!
When he does report what he knows he reaches out to someone in the same police corrupt police department he works in to report it... Are you kidding me??? Really???
It gets dumber yet! Benicio's character then agreed to meet with the same crooked cop hiding the car (his inlaw uncle by the way) the following morning. Completely once again clueless & unaware that he was walking into a setup by the same guy he confided in and reported this illegal activity to the night before. The same guy he gave the proof to. The same guy who then tries to kill him, lol!
Of course it all works out in the end, miraculously. Grant Singer & Benjamin Brewer were the writers of this truly stupid script. I would like to say I cannot believe that Netflix actually proceeded with this script but yup, I can! They are getting really aggressive at taking these horribly written nightmares on.
As far as the acting it was great, I like Benicio Del Toro and the rest. It's just a shame they didn't have a better script to follow but paying work is paying work and everyone has to earn a living.
