Big Vampire lit & film fan here
This film moved so slowly I was ready to walk out at least 3 times . The character of Count Orlock could have been fleshed out (no pun) so much more . His voiceovers were probably the best part of the film . Nothing was delved into . Nothing had backstories . LRD's character was presented as an epileptic & that early experience was never clearly explained/defined -- demon? Nowhere is the tale in lore tied to literal occultism .
Skรฅrsgard was said to have sat hours for makeup & prosthetics but all we really got to see were his hands . Dafoe as an erstwhile Van Helsing ..?
They hinted at hyperemia or anemia but never went past that - *a disease of the blood*-
The "gypsy" superstition had about a minute there - i was so expecting more & was so disappointed . Eggers has made quality cinema . Every film whether a remake, sequel - needs to be able to stand on its own as a story .
This film is disjointed, vague & I won't recommend it .
