*“The Substance” is a film that’s truly beyond comprehension — and not in a good way. Demi Moore, an actress who’s had some amazing performances, seems utterly wasted here, literally just going through the motions in a script that feels like it was written during a caffeine crash. The plot is incoherent, a mess of half-baked ideas and unfulfilled plot points that leave you wondering if the filmmakers were just making things up as they went. The so-called “horror” is laughable. Jump scares fall flat, and the tension is nonexistent. Even the special effects look like they were done on a high-schooler’s budget. Character motivations make no sense, pacing is painful, and honestly, the ending is so ridiculous that I was laughing out loud in a movie that’s supposed to be suspenseful. Save yourself the time and skip this one. “The Substance” is nothing more than a pointless attempt to cling to the genre, and it fails on every level. Demi Moore deserves better — and so does the audience.*
