Don't know why the story of us Puerto Ricans is being told by white American people and non-Puerto Rican actors. There was no point in remaking the already offensive and disgusting original. The only good thing about Spielberg's version is that it doesn't have brownface. The movie still perpetuates the disgusting stereotypes put upon us Puerto Ricans by the Americans, and it further promotes the idea that America is supreme over Puerto Rico and that us Puerto Ricans would be nothing without them. This movie is just another film about minorities made by white people for white people under the guise of being "woke" and "accurate" to the people it's supposed to represent. Just because it has Latino actors doesn't make it better, given the fact that non of the leads are played by Puerto Rican actors. And no, Latino/Hispanic people aren't all the same and don't have the same experience. Everyone involved in the making of this movie fails to realize how disrespectful and degrading it is towards Puerto Ricans, especially given Puerto Rico's status as a colony of the US and their complicated relationship.
Besides the racism, the movie is full of bad acting, questionable Spanish, and atrocious fake Puerto Rican accents. Please, leave West Side Story in the past where it belongs and don't give it the praise it thinks it deserves. I'd give it zero stars if I could.
