(This is review for season 1 only.) Fantastic and brilliantly made drama! The casts, script, plot, cinematography, everything is perfect. This drama is so magical, adventures, inspiring, romantic, funny, creative and interesting. All elements- action, thrill, romance, funny, dramatic - are given EQUAL attention in this season 1. Its not too cheesy of romance, and not too dark/actions. It has a little bit of everything in it. Watch it if you want to dive into an experience of fantasy that wakes up all your senses. Really, you don't even feel one hour has passed with every episode. At each ending you just want to continue to the next episode, you can't stop 😅 There's a lot going on in one episode, it was compact and full of stories, fast paced but not too fast, you're still able to keep up with it. The plots are unpredictable and creative, the writers are always thinking out of the box. For those who likes cheesy romance might prefer season 2 than season 1. But for those who like a balance of a lot of elements and want to see something different from the normal kdramas, this is the thing. I like the fact that they create a woman character that is so strong and brave, something that we rarely see in a historical kdrama. Like in fighting scene between Park Jinnand Naksu, she alone was able to fight with hundred of mages strongly eventhough they kept attacking and swarming over her. That particular scene had me hooked on this series. Even after she had lost her power, she was still able to use her witty brain to accomplish any missions she's up to. And the story Jang Uk training, failing and get up again untill he became the best mage was really inspiring. A big applause to Jung So Min for able to play 4 different characters (mudeok the servant, naksu the master, jin buyeon, mirror ghost) interchangeably and has made the drama come to life.

I was quite frustrated becoz they change the characteristics of the female lead. I don't mind to change the actress, but they shouldn't change her characteristics/personality. To be honest, one of the main charms of AoS season 1 is the strong badass character of Naksu. We rarely see that kind of woman character in other Korean historical drama. But in S2, they changed her character into a flirty, acting cute girl. That has made me feel so awkward n can't connect the two seasons at all. Season 1 was very extraordinary, magical and mystery. But season 2 just like an ordinary romcom kdrama. I was like, "am i watching AoS right now?" It feels like watching a different drama. They shouldn't change the main theme. The storyline n script was boring except for the last 4 episodes. All the funny scenes seem so fake, not like in S1 where all the funny scenes just fall naturally. I mean, what happened to the writer's creativity in S2? Or is it the new pair of leads lack of creativity to do adlibs to make the scenes flow more smoothly.. Sometimes the FL n ML were fighting for no clear reasons. And why is Jang Uk sooo slow in recognizing his fiance even with a lot of hints? It is so unlogic. its clearly the writer is dragging the drama. Even the camera also always stiff n lack of movements, a lot of times the scenes look like a raw recorded video. I was dragging myself to finish the first 6 episodes, fortunately the last 4 ep was very exciting n creatively written that has manage to leave a very big impact to viewers n that had saved the whole season 2. If they cut all the unnecessary and unfunny comedy scenes, season 2 might only need just 6 episodes.
