While I believe in Keke Palmer as an actress, this was not the role for her. More so because of the writing & director than her acting I believe. I'm convinced that others who left glowing reviews were paid to do so, bc under no stretch of the imagination, was I glued to my seat, the screen, the story line, the characters, or any part of the movie. If you set a movie in the Bronx, you either have to cast actors who can mimic a NY accent or @ least the lingo. Aunjanue Ellis (the Mother) was the only believable character. Keke's "Pimp" portrayal had no hardness, finesse, or game to make you forget that you're watching Keke Palmer, though she nailed the look of a soft butch lesbian (sorry if the term isn't PC, Idk what the PC term is). There was no real character development to make feel connected to the story or the characters. Watching on Amazon Prime as opposed to paying to see it lowered my disappointment some. As stated, I enjoy Keke as an actress & look forward to supporting her future projects, but this is a NO.
