Some folks are trying their best to find places to dump on this remake for being a remake release at a full triple A price giving 1 star reviews. It's pretty silly and petty, too many people with too much time review bombing a product they probably didn't even purchase. Regardless, the game broke 5 million sales weeks before it even released so, it's a success. I preordered the Firefly edition myself and they could have gotten more from me. Out of the dozens of games I have played in 2022 this easily gets into my top 10 despite just being a remake.
That said, it's gorgeous. The only complaint to really be had is the multiplayer Factions is not in this release. Personally, I never cared about that though, it's all about the incredible single player experience.
The AI was massively overhauled. It's not hard to find many, many videos of the original displaying how incredible bad the AI was in the original release and the remaster. Here you won't have Ellie clipping through Joel or running in circles in the middle of a hoard. In this game you won't see NPCs simply running on train tracks. In the original release I got to a point where I could run through grounded easily because I knew what to do and when to do it because I knew exactly where every npc would be and what they'd do in reaction to my actions, it was insanely predictable. This new release handles all this much, much better.
Movements wise, it's true dodge and prone were not added largely because it would have required a total overhaul of level designs to account for. Despite this, I did notice when comparing directly to the PS4 remaster that the controls are smoother, cleaner and more responsive.
Lighting, reflections, shadows and other post processing are massively improved. Keep in mind even the PS4 Pro version of the game could do little other than provide higher resolution/framerates of a Ps3 game, it didn't have PS4 generation post effects, it had late-Ps3.
The character models are massively, massively improved. There are some fights about them because most characters appear much older but, if you look at Naughtydog's official sources to check the age of these characters and consider their dystopian lives it was how young they looked in the original that made no sense.
*note... Yeah, I'm a huge fan. I'll pay full price again for the most expensive edition when this game is released on PC as officially planned. There's really only a handful of games each year that come out that really stick with my mind, I forget far more games I play and finish than I remember. This one always, always stayed in my head.
